Fresh Food Right In Your Neighborhood

This is the season of fun, food and more fun. The food part is
what parents and adults are interested in because of food
additives and chemicals that they do not want in their meals.
With farmers’ markets in abundance in your area, and throughout
your state, you can have fresh food for every meal and never
duplicate the possibilities. Taking advantage of what the growing
season so generously provides is totally to your benefit.

Ripe beautiful produce picked that very day is what food was meant
to be. It is not processed, it has not traveled hundreds of miles, and
it just looks good, even to children. The colors, the aromas, and the
succulent juices of summer time fruits and vegetables just can’t be
beat. With every meal, a healthy choice would be to fill at least
half your plate with fresh ingredients such as fruit slices, tomato
or cucumber salads, and so on. In fact, making your plate hold a
salad of your own creation can satisfy the biggest appetites. Toppings
for grilled foods, such as hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, and steaks
add color appeal, and whets those sluggish appetites when the heat
is turned up on steamy days. Bowls of fresh fruits such as peaches,
cherries, strawberries, blueberries, plums, oh, I am getting hungry
just thinking about the possibilities.
We can’t forget fresh corn on the cob just dripping with butter and
your favorite spices such as cayenne pepper, parsley, sliced spring
onions, or whatever you have found is your favorite.
At the markets you can also get home baked breads, eggs, honey,
relishes, canned goodness such as chutneys, salsas, and even
cheeses. You can even pick up a bouquet of
lovely flowers to grace your table and add to the beauty of mealtime.
When traveling around your state, pack a cooler with some ice. You
might just come across a market that has something you never even
thought of and keeping it nice and cool till you get home will protect
the treasures you discover.

So the next time you bite into that ruby red strawberry, or add those
dark blue blueberries to your morning cereal, raise your spoon and
say a silent thank you to the many farmers who labor in the hot sun
to bring you and your family the best eating ever. When you pass
by a farm and the tractor is making its rounds, wave to your new best
meal time friends – your local farmers.
Enjoy this wonderful time of year, the wonderful state you call home,
and sit down to meals that are a taste of heaven – it just doesn’t
get better than that.
